The Birth: Metropolis used to be a calm town with a very low crime rate. The town's hero, Superman could easily handle the riff raff and the occasional invading aliens. And besides, the Metropolis P.D. under Captain Bill Henderson and the S.C.U. under Maggie Sawyer were specially trained for this work. But when the city started making Gotham City look like a walk in the park where crime was concerned, more man power; more unorthodox crimefighters were needed to nip crime straight in the bud. A lot of new heroes arrived on the scene. One of them was Gangbuster, an ordianry civilian who had been inspired by Superman. Gangbuster's costume first saw the light of day in Adventures Of Superman #434 (November 1987) after he was created by Jerry Ordway and Mike Machlan.
The Alter Ego: A lot can be said about the person under the helmet in
terms of humanity; that he is a kind, considerate, caring, brave and noble soul
who'd go to great lengths to help others. His name is José Delgado, a hispanic from
suicide slum. When he was a teenster, José himself was running around in a gang.
At that time they were into only small crimes..stupid, sensless stuff where their
lives weren't at stake, not like some of them today. He may not have listened when
Father Kenny tried to get him to quit his teen gang. But like his friends, he
learned, served some time and changed his ways. Now he's on the opposite side of the
law, giving them a helping hand.
His role as Gangbuster is not too hard for him; after all he got the Golden Gloves
award under his belt for his outstanding boxing abilities. But he does hate
the job when he forcebly has to break bones and crack skulls to get his point across.
As for his personal life, for a time José was going out with Lois Lane, but
then as Lois and Clark got serious, Catherine Grant started showing an interest in
him. Things went bad with Cat, mainly because of her son, Adam, who was a self
centered brat.
The Legend: Gangbuster's entry into the vigilante world came at a time
when Metropolis was going through a major crime rise. He generally uses his muscle
to bring his foes to justice, but also employs a pair of nunchucks and a small
zapper which can give a nasty electric shock to his opponents.
There was a time when José; while protecting Lois from Combattor, was injured in
battle and lost the use of his legs. Lexcorp scientists treated him and had him standing
on his legs in a short time. Lex Luthor was never one to
indulge in charity unless it benefitted him. He had his scientists implant a tiny
chip in José's body, giving him complete control of his actions. With Emil
Hamilton's help, José was once again a free man, and though most of the city knew
his secret identity after his ill-fated match with Combattor, he still had the
courage to prowl the streets once more as Gangbuster. Though the police and the
S.C.U don't approve of his methods they're mighty glad that he is on their side.
For a time José had given up the costume at the behest of his girlfriend
Catherine Grant. But when Superman lost his life battling the rampaging beast,
Doomsday, he felt a need to fill the void, what with all the crime that had
escalated once people knew that Big Blue had bought it. By that time, very
few people actually remembered that the man behind the mask was José Delgado,
like Bill Henderson. And when a warrant was issued for Gangbuster's arrest for
the use of excessive force, Bill was prepared to look the other way. He
handed José a bus ticket and told him to get out of town before the police
check back references and find out his real identity.
