Born on May 25, 1968, Jake McCarthy sacrificed a medical career, leaving California to join the New York City police force. Jake is a model officer, who takes a "by-the- book" approach to his work. This is in stark contrast to his partner, Sara Pezzini,(See Witchblade) who sometimes is more than willing to bend the rules.
Jake's association with his partner has been strained and difficult due, in no small part, to the Witchblade and his own feelings towards Sara. In leaving California, Jake also left behind an old girlfriend, Cynthia, who still pines for him. This unresolved relationship is ever present in Jake's life.
Jake has associated with informants such as the television reporter, Rebecca, and Bruce Wilder. These associations have led to Jake being pitched into dangerous situations which have tested the limits of his work ethic. The pressures of the job have overwhelmed him at times, exposing a vulnerable side which he tries to keep buried. As a cop, Jake is still trying to gain respect from his peers -- it may be that this respect will only come once he begins to respect himself rather than try to be someone he is not.
