The Birth:
When Daily Bugle worker Ben Ulrich and his
nephew, Phil Ulrich; also an intern at the Bugle were investigating
an old Osborn Industries warehouse, a group of thugs jumped Ben.
While searching for cover, Phil accidently discovered the secret
headquarters of Harry Osborn -
the second Green Goblin.
He backed up into a large cannister full of icky green fluid, and got
covered in the highly dangerous Stromm Formula. Knowing his uncle was
in trouble, Phil quickly donned the costume and succeeded in scaring
off the criminals.
He first appeared in Web of Spider-Man #128 and his origin is
detailed in Green Goblin #1.
The Alter Ego: Phil Ulrich finished his high school and joined the Daily Bugle as a Journalism Intern. He is hardly one of those "handsome types" and has rather "gawky" features. Like the early Pater Parker, he has the uncanny ability to look like a geek at any given time.
The Legend:
After he saved his Uncle Ben from the hoods and
went home did he realize the potential of the costume. Apparently,
this new costume was designed by Harry Osborn as a new age Green
Goblin. It had a lot a hi-fi paraphernelia fitted directly into the
costume. Phil thought it'd be "cool" to keep this gear and became the
Green Goblin just for kicks.
The suit enhaced his strength to super-human levels. The suit also
acts as a shock absorber, preventing damage to Phil's body. Whenever
Phil dons the mask, it delivers a massive electrical charge throughout
his body, boosting his natural abilities. The mask also hides a device
that gives Phil his maniacal laugh. The rest of the gadgets installed
in the mask include remote cameras, scanners, and 'glider-cam' vision
abilites. And the gloves have been modified to project energy beams
and bright flashes from small finger-blasters. As usual the Goblin's
mode of transport is the ever-trusty Bat Glider. It was modified
to give more power and a camera was hooked to the nose for reconaissance
purposes. Phil also rigged a video-game joystick to give him remote
conrol access to the glider.
He fought villains like theHobgoblin
and the Rhino. He also teamed up with Scarlet Spider
to stop the players in "The Great Game".
But it was only after New York Judge Tomb put a contract on his
Uncle's life that Phil realized that with great power also came
great responsibility. With a new found seriousness in his super-
heroeing jig, he along with Daredevil, fought the assasin; Purge and
sent a warning to the judge.
Now, a serious crime-fighter, he quickly became a cult idol among
the youngsters as the renegade hero who walked the line with his
own rules. The popularity also brought Liz Osborn searching for the
man behind her late husbands mask. But when this new Goblin saved Liz
and her son Normie from the villain Angel Face, she gave him her
blessings.
But as fate had it, the curse of the Green Goblin befell Phil
Ulrich. During Onslaught's attack the Green Goblin went head-to-head
with a Sentinel and the battle damaged his costume beyond repair.
That's when Phil decided to ditch the super-hero jig and go back to
his normal mundane existance.
