The Birth: In 1962 Stan Lee and Jack Kirby create "The Incredible Hulk" comic book. This comic lasted for 6 issues and had the first appearance of the Gray Hulk. Then in 1964, Giant-Man was starring in a comic book called Tales to Astonish. In issue #59, he fought the Hulk. The next issue, #60, the Tales to Astonish comic book split into two sections. The first half a story starring Giant-Man and the second half starring the Hulk. In issue #70, The Sub-Mariner took over Giant-Man's place. In 1968, The Hulk officially takes over the entire book and it is renamed "The Incredible Hulk" which explains why you will never find issues #7-#101 for The Incredible Hulk. Then after issue #474, The Incredible Hulk comic is terminated and a new one titled "The Hulk" starts at issue #1, but maintaining the continuinty. In the year 2000, starting with issue #12, The "Incredible" is added back to the title.
......
The Hulk all started with the testing of the "gamma bomb"; one
of the world's most awesome weapons that was created by Dr. Robert Bruce
Banner. Security had cordoned off the entire area in the desert where
the bomb was being tested but somehow a young kid slipped through the
security lines to fulfill a wager he had made with his friends. But
the countdown had already started. When Dr.Bruce Banner saw the kid
through his binocs, he rushed out to warn him, telling his assistent;
Igor to delay the countdown. But unfortunately that never happened
and while Banner got the kid to the protective trench the bomb
detonated and the good doctor absorbed the full force of the
gamma rays.
The kid brought Banner to a medical unit where they were both
treated and quarantined. That's where the two got formerly introduced
to each other. The kid's name was Rick Jones.
At nightfall, duo noticed that the geiger counter started
going crazy measuring high amounts of radiation. And then.....slowly..
..Bruce Banner started his first transformation into The...Hulk!
As the big goliath broke through the two foot thick concrete wall of
their prison Rick followed him. An amry jeep sighted the monster but
could not swerve out of the way in time and ended up hitting him. The
monster survived but the jeep was totalled. As the word got out, the
army sent out orders to capture this monster and that's when a soldier
labled the menace as the Hulk.....a name that finally stuck to
him.
The Alter Ego: Bruce Banner is a world renown physicist and
a genius. He is a mild character and has an almost overwhelming sense of
morality and prefers to shun the expression of his emotions.
Brian Banner, fell madely in love with Rebecca Walters, and had a son
named Bruce. Brian was driven insane with jealousy of Bruce because
Rebecca loved him, ending in Brian murdering Rebecca, and being locked in
a metal institute. Bruce was raised by his aunt, Mrs. Drake, while
haboring the pain and rage he felt towards his father. This probably
is one of the reasons he suffers from "Multiple Personality Disorder
" - which surfaced after his transformation into the Hulk.
Bruce Banner before becoming the Hulk was friendly with General
'Thunderbolt' Ross' daughter; Betty Ross. Betty came to care deeply for
Banner. When she finally found out that he was the Hulk, she tried to
accept it. She felt compassion for this man-monster but could not
overcome her fear. Of course, later on Bruce and Betty got married and
eventually she changed from a wuss into a tough-gal.
When Bruce was on the run, there were many times when he and Betty
had drifted apart. During that time, both Bruce and the Hulk were
searching for a quiet life where no-one would disturb them.
During the times where he and Betty had separated, Banner had
a few other flames as well like Jarella of K'ai; who accepted both
Banner and the Hulk, Katherine Waynesboro; who was with Banner during
his Savage Hulk side and Marlo Jones; who was Mr. Fixit's girlfriend.
(Mr. Fixit a.k.a The Gray Hulk)
The Legend: The Hulk who first emerged was gray skinned and
brutish. As the mutation progressed, the skin changed from gray
to the familiar green color, though for a time the gray hulk personna
remained with his mind. The gray Hulk represents Banner's aggressive
nature and feelings as an adult. It is characterized by devising clever
strategies despite its brutish behavior. Although the gray Hulk has
the potential to draw upon all of Banner’s knowledge base, it usually
draws upon just enough to have a normal intelligence level. During the
period of the Gray Hulk, the transformation would take place only at
night and come sunrise he would revert back to Robert Bruce Banner.
In The Incredible Hulk #368 it was revealed that Bruce's
shame of the
dark feelings that the Gray Hulk represented was the real reason why
the Gray Hulk was dominant only at night.
Shortly after his first transformation, Banner created a machine
that would allow him to change at will. Unfortunately, after a number of
such changes, Hulk/Banner's body chemistry shifted, resulting in him
going into Hulk mode whenever his adrenanline levels went high. Because
of this he could change at any time - not only under the cover of
darkness.
......
As the Hulk, Banner has near limitless strength, able to lift over
100 tons. That amount increases the madder Hulk gets. With his
powerful calves, the Hulk, in one leap, could cover over three miles.
The Hulk also has incredible durability, able to take on the
impact of numerous missles. He can withstand extreme tempertatures,
ranging from 3,000°F to -190°F. Hulk is imperivous to viruses and
injury.
Hulk does possess a mystical ability to sence beings in their
astral form and the ability to find his way back to the exact
loctation of his creation. Infact whenever the Hulk undergoes some
major change in his life, he always makes his way to the Gamma Base
or the site where the gamma bomb detonated.
When Bruce Banner changed into the Hulk he was already in love
with Elizabeth Ross; daughter of General Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt'
Ross and the late Karen Lee Ross. Although General Ross dearly loved
his daughter, Betty felt that need to be the son that he always wanted.
In the begining, Betty was a frail and fragile lady. As the Hulk, he
has saved Betty Ross many times from the
clutches of villains who'd kidnap her to use her as bait. She never knew
that Banner was the Hulk until Rick Jones told her in Tales To
Astonish #78. But it was only in Tales To Astonish #87
where she
actually witnessed the Banner's transformation into the Hulk.
There was a time when Banner was just about to marry Betty, thinking
that he had finally been cured. But after the Leader struck, Banner
changed once more into the Hulk. In the process, he destroyed Betty's
childhood house and also attacked her father who landed up in hospital.
In The Incredible Hulk #140,
After the Hulk was accidentally transported to K'ai
by Psyklop,
the Hulk defeated the Warthos that were attacking K'ai. Now the
Empress of K'ai was a lady names Jarella who forbidden from
marrying anyone who not defeated the Warthos. This was one of the
times when Banner and Betty had separated. from each other.
Jarella commanded her Pantheon of Sorcerers to cast a spell to
enable the Hulk to understand their language. Although the spell was
successful, it also made Bruce's mind dominant in the Hulk's form.
Jarella helped the Hulk accept that he belonged in K'ai.
Unfortunately, a day before Jarella and the Hulk were to be married,
Psyklop located the Hulk and brought him back to Earth. Soon after
this, Lord Visis organized a group of rebels to aid him
overthrow Jarella. After single handedly defeating some of Visis'
forces, Jarella convinced her Pantheon of Sorcerers to transport her
to Earth since they could not bring the Hulk back to K'ai.
But Visis had been magically observing the couple and sent
Fialan; one of his assasins to kill Jarella. Fialan was unsuccessful
but later Jarella agreed to transport herself back to K'ai to help
her people and save Earth from the disturbances her presence was
causing.
Visis conquered K'ai and took Jarella and her people as prisoners.
Later, Visis forced Jarella to marry him. But the Hulk intervened
and rescued Jarella before she exchanged vows with Visis. She returned
with him to Earth. Later, the Hulk got into a fight with a robot
called Crypto-Man who was sent to capture Jarella. During the fight
Jarella was killed when as she rescued a child from falling wall.
Betty Ross, when separated from Banner also got involed. When
she learned that Bruce was in love with Jarella, she got married to
Major Talbot. After learning that Major Talbot had died on a mission
she had a nervous breakdown. Modok, thought that he could use Betty
to get his revenge on Hulk so he kidnapped her and using gamma
radiation changed her into Harpy; a green monster with
wings and bird like legs. And Harpy almost defeated the Hulk but
fot the timely intervention the Bi-Beast. Bruce then drained the
gamma radiation from Harpy's body coverting her back into
Betty Ross.
Major Glenn Talbot soon turned up alive and Betty and Glenn
decided to end their marriage since it wasn't working out.
Shortly after this, the Hulk Hunters had caught up with
the Savage Hulk. What Betty, Rick and Hulk didn't know was that
the Hunters were in need of the Hulk's aid. In order to help
the Hulk, Rick gave himself a dose of the same gamms rays which
gave Banner the power of the Hulk. But the rays only gave him a
radiation poisoning.
Bruce Banner and the Hulk vanished and
Betty Ross, Rick Jones and an alien named Bereet set out to find
him. Bereet was an alien from Krylor who was on Earth to film a
documentary about Bruce Banner and the Hulk. Eventually, when the
trio found Hulk at the Gamma Base, he cured Rick of his ailment.
The Hulk had also become "intelligent" having the
mind of Bruce Banner and the strength and body of the Hulk.
The U-Foes also arrived on the scene and captured the Hulk
threatening to kill him on national television. But he was saved
by Rick, Bereet and Betty.
Betty then left Bruce when she heard he revealed that he did not
want to cure himself of becoming the Hulk,
leaving Bereet to make her moves on Bruce. She
had a soft spot for him. The government granted amnesty to
the Hulk proclaiming him as a HERO.
Another one of his loves was Katherine 'Kate' Waynesboro, another
scientist who was also knowledgable in gamma radiation. She came into
his life soon after Betty left Banner.
Somehow, this intelligent Hulk was not meant to last and he
finally reverted to the Savage beast he used to be. Dr. Stephen
Strange banished Hulk from Earth to the crossroads.
After his adventures in diffrent worlds and at the crossroads,
Bruce Banner finally returned to Earth. Shortly after Bruce was
physically separated from the Hulk by Doc Samson, Bruce proposed
to her. The two were married; inspite of an interruption from
General Ross who came in brandishing a gun.
Once, when Betty was seriously injured and went into cardiac arrest,
her spirit hepled the Savage Hulk revert back to Hulk.
After that the Hulk busted Betty out of the hospital and the couple
ran as fugitives to a town called Sunville in Florida where she
assumed the identity of Betty Danner and worked as a librarian.
.....
During the Onslaught attack, Onslaught
gained control of Hulk's mind and forced him to fight Cable. Storm and Cable
fought against the green goliath and eventually freed him from
Onslaught's control. The Hulk then stayed behind to help the Avengers
and X-Men fight Onslaught.
Onslaught separated the Hulk from Bruce. Later, Bruce and the
other heroes entered Onslaught's essence to contain him and seemingly
died when Onslaught's form was disrupted. Actually they were
transported to an alternate universe (Heroes Reborn U) by young
Franklin Richards.
Nearly half the world held up candles to salute the Hulk since
he was one a the few who had survived the attack of Onslaught.
.....
After this the military again went after the green goliath who
easily defeated them. He and Janus then declared that if the military
tried to attack him he would destroy a major metropolitan city
and hold the military accountable. Some time later, the Hulk retreated
to Duck Key Island. He helped the islanders save the island from the
oncoming Hurricane Betty.
On the run agin, Hulk fled to Antartica where he fought against
Ka-Zar and Wolverine. With differences settled, Wolvie brought the
Hulk to the X-Mansion for treatment. (the Hulk had mysteriously
collapsed in battle)
..... Much later, following the conclusion of the Heroes Return story line, the Hulk was merged once again with Bruce and arrived back on Earth at the gamma bomb site. He continued his adventures sometimes as a hero sometimes as a fugitive.
