The Birth: With all the kinds of heroes and villains on the scene Marvel thought why not get a psychic too. And that was a real cool move. Madame Web made her debut in Amazing Spider-Man #210. Peter Parker's friend Deborah Whitman gave him the card of a clairvoyant she knew about, but his first impression was that like all the others she was probably a fraud. It was only when her card showed up at the scene of a crime that Spider-Man decided to check her out.
The Alter Ego: The clairvoyant's real name is Cassandra Web. She was born with her psychic powers. As time went on, her body began to fail and she became paralyzed as well as blind. She is incapable of using anything save for her mind, mouth and ears and is permanently hooked onto a life support machine that performs all her bodily functions as well as a lot more.
The Legend: When Spidey found Madame Web's card at the scene
of a crime, he decided to check out this phony. Turned out that Spidey
himself became a believer when he was faced by the accuracy of her
"visions". Since then, Madame Web has helped Spier-Man on many
occasions. With her paranormal powers she came to know Spier-Man's real
identity. Though our spider was not thrilled about her discovery, he was
at least happy that she was one of the good gals.
As her fane grew, another person got particularly interested in her.
He was Black Tom Cassidy. With her by his side, he thought he would be
able to escape the arm of the law forever. He sent the Juggernaut after
her. Madame Web got the vision her her attacker coming by sea and phoned
Spidey for help. But Spider-Man was unable to stop the Juggernaut before
he yanked her out of her life support system. When the wen slinger told
him that she would die if out of her chair, the callous villain dropped
her like a sack of potatoes and walked off! Madame Web recuiperated
in hospital.
She uses no weapons and does not charge into battle like any other
heroine. She just sits in her chair and forewarns people of coming
danger. Though blind, she can "see" better than most others.
As well as being a high level clairvoyant herself, she could actually foster
second sight in other with latent talents. As time went on, her body began to
fail and she became paralyzed as well as blind. Her late husbands parting gift
to her was the elaborate life support chair that performs all her biological
functions. This "chair" has all the necessities she needs, like telephones
televisions and can be activated by her thought.
