The Birth: As Metropolis started attracting more and more of the super-villian trouble, a need was found to establish a task force just to task care of such problems. In time, the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit (S.C.U.) was formed.
The Legend: The best men were picked out for duty in the
S.C.U. They weren't just a bunch of hot-shot cops - no, these
were
tough cops equipped with specialized functions : paramedics, munitions
experts, physicists, psychologists and the like, all headed by one of
the finest cops of Metropolis :Inspector Maggie Sawyer.
The other top dogs of the force include Dan "Terrible"
Turpin, Russell Tenclouds, Lyle Beedler, Aron Jace and Chidi. For a time,
Daily Planet reporter, Lois Lane (See Lois
Lane) worked with the S.C.U. Team as a temporary replacement for
Shelley, a team member who got mowed down in the line of duty.
While Dan brings out the big guns, Lyle is the scientist on the team
and Chidi helps profiling criminals and determining their next move
with her psychological approach. Some time back, Jace and Tenclouds
were murdered by the being known as Hellgramite when they were
on duty.
The S.C.U. helps the city whenever Superman
(See Superman) is busy. They are an essential part of the justice
department and have put up an outstanding performance right from the
day it was first formed.
The backbone of the team, Maggie Sawyer, was the head of the
team even when she was Captain. Later Commissioner Henderson promoted
her since technically many of her officers outranked her.
Maggie was always a workaholic who kept on pushing till she solved the
case, and often unknowingly gave a lesser priority to her family and
friends. This often alienated her from them causing tension to rise
up.
Dan Turpin is a World War II veteran. During the war he never
wore a helmet and he sure doesn't carry one now. Instead, he goes
about in the bowler and his pinstriped trousers. And he's one tough
cop. Turpin was a tough one right from when he was a little critter.
He was in the Boy Commandos as a kid and once on a mission
even helped out the Newsboy Legion against Boss Moxie. Turpin's been
in sticky situations more than often but always manages to land on
his feet.
