The Birth: The year was 1992. Superman
had been slain in battle with Doomsday. Then
suddenly, out of the blue, four Supermen appeared on the scene to protect
Metropolis. One of them was the Cyborg. The Cyborg claimed he was the one
true Superman; the very one who battled Doomsday to a standstill.
Half man - half machine, he certainly didn't look the part; anyone
could put on a blue suit and red cape. So to prove his identity, he let
Lois Lane interview him. The Cyborg claimed to be the victim of some kind
of amnesia - most of his memory had been wiped clean. As for his fiancé, he
remembered Lois only as an important person in his "previous" life.
Unconvinced, she had old time friend, Emil Hamilton run some scans on
the Cyborg. Hamilton had already run umpteen tests on Superman before his
death as well as on Kryptonian technology; including the
"Artifact". Of course, as Cyborg had predicted, the
results were positive: the D.N.A coincided with that of Supes and his
metal half was of similar material as the Artifact.
The Cyborg had a cameo role in Adventures of Superman #500 (June 1993) and got his first starring role in Superman #78 (June 1993).
The Alter Ego: Cyborg's real name used to be Hank Henshaw. He
was part of a NASA flight team. During one of the flights their shuttle was
hit by strange radiation which genetically altered all those on board,
giving them amazing powers.
Superman later arrived on he scene but could not save the crew from the
cosmic radiation which proved to be fatal. In fact Henshaw died while
using his genius to save his wife from the fatal radiation.
.......
This was the end of the human side of Hank Henshaw.
Before his apparent death, Henshaw was able to transfer his
consciousness into the on board computer. He soon became a master of mechanical
matters. This was the birth of the Cyborg. Assimilating surrounding
machinery, Henshaw transformed himself into a robot and returned to his wife.
But the physical death of her husband coupled by the new "look" and the
effects of the radiation drove her off the bend and soon into the grave.
The Legend: Henshaw's new electromechanical presnce was so powerful
that he disrupted Earth's entire communications network. Now, no longer human,
a disruption that Earth could not tolerate, he fled into space where he
transmitted his essence into the Kryptonian Matrix Chamber that birthed
Superman. Inhabiting and controlling the Matrix, he molded it into a vessel
which he used for space travel.
.......
Eventually, the Cyborg arrived on Peroton 5,a simple planet with limited
technology and ironically, the new kingdom of the outsted emperor,
Mongul. Bonding with a native of the planet, Henshaw
learned of Mongul and soon arrived in front of the warrior himself,
submitting him to his knees after proving more superior to him.
.......
With Mongul by his side, the Cyborg commenced plans to make Earth
into another Warworld. With Supes dead, the only way to get his revenge on
the Kryptonian (who he somehow blamed for his fate) was to make the world
hate him and reduce the hero's name to mud.
.......
His arrival at Metropolis was initially regarded with suspision.
But with his identity established by Emil Hamilton and
the media, the Cyborg went about deceiving the world, including people like
the United States President, Lois Lane and Ron Harper.
.......
Ultimately with the help of Superboy,
Supergirl,Steel,
The Eradicator and Green Lantern
Superman was able to defeat the Cyborg, killing
him in the process.
.......
But the threat was not yet over. When he had initially arrived in town,
he had payed a visit to Cadmus and removed
Doomsday's body on the pretext of getting rid of a threat. He
transfered his essence to a capsule which he stored on the body and then
flung the body into space.
.......
Later on the body was brought to Apokolips, home of
Darksied, master of the Omega beams. Again the Cyborg awake to wreak
havoc on the planet along with the Armageddon creature, but he was soon
imprisoned by Darksied and used as his pawn against Superman.
